John 14:26-27
“But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” John 14:26-27 NIV
So much of the time its easy to get upset at what is going on in the world. There’s destruction, wars, famine and many other things that try to steal our peace. If we always focus on what’s going wrong in the world, we can easily become upset and disillusioned. However these verses tell us to respond differently.
These verses tell us to not let our hearts be troubled and to not be afraid. Yes, there are crazy things happening in the world, and yes those things can seem scary and overwhelming at times, but our response as Christians shouldn’t be fear. The Holy Spirit, our Comforter and Counselor, will bring us peace. This peace is not an absence of difficulties, an end to all strife, or the cessation of all disagreements. We know that those problems will not disappear in our fallen world as we know it now. However, the gift of God's presence, the gift of Jesus guidance, and the blessing of the Holy Spirit mean that we can have peace in our storms, struggles, and fallen world.
God is present within us to guide, strengthen, comfort, lead, inspire, motivate, and bless. We are not alone as we face every challenge of life because God is not only with us, but He is within us. Jesus’s return to heaven is not a loss of peace or His abandonment of us. It is His going away so that the Father can send us the gift of the Holy Spirit, who brings us God's peace.
We have peace, wonderful peace with God, because we are saved. Through believing on Christ's finished work of redemption, we have peace with God, for Christ is the propitiation for our sins Who made peace with God on our behalf.
We have peace, the wonderful peace of God that surpasses all understanding, even through days of deep distress and troubling times, when we submit to His leading and follow His example, by saying: "Not my will but Thine be done."
We have peace, the wonderful peace of Christ's own perfect peace, for we are in eternal union with our Savior and we can enjoy precious communion with the Father as we walk in spirit and truth.
We have been given peace, the wonderful peace of the Spirit of Christ deep in our inner beings, for He has taken up permanent residence within our bodies, through all time and into all eternity.
Christ left a wonderful legacy of His inner peace, His wonderful gospel of peace to be shared abroad to a world in clamour, a world of strife, and a world of broken lives and deep pain so that all that believe on Him will have wonderful peace.
Humanity longs for perfect peace, precious peace, God's wonderful peace but there is no peace on earth without Christ. We can choose to live in God’s peace and not to be afraid.
So if the news and what is going on in the world leaves you scared and feeling afraid, take comfort. You’ve got Jesus on your side and He’s got peace for you when you experience torment and fear.
May the God of peace be with you, as you rest and abide in Christ's peace - His wonderful, wonderful peace!!!
