Isaiah 65:17-25
“See, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I will create, for I will create Jerusalem to be a delight and its people a joy. I will rejoice over Jerusalem and take delight in my people; the sound of weeping and of crying will be heard in it no more. “Never again will there be in it an infant who lives but a few days, or an old man who does not live out his years; the one who dies at a hundred will be thought a mere child; the one who fails to reach a hundred will be considered accursed. They will build houses and dwell in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit. No longer will they build houses and others live in them, or plant and others eat. For as the days of a tree, so will be the days of my people; my chosen ones will long enjoy the work of their hands. They will not labor in vain, nor will they bear children doomed to misfortune; for they will be a people blessed by the Lord, they and their descendants with them. Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear. The wolf and the lamb will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, and dust will be the serpent’s food. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain,” says the Lord.”
Isaiah 65:17-25 NIV
This passage is referring to a time in which Christ is coming to set right what has been made wrong. Christ is coming back to redeem the church, its people and eradicate sin and restore the earth back to what it was originally created to be:without sin. Essentially this is referring to Christ’s return to this earth and taking us to spend eternity with Him. This will be a time in which we will no longer have to worry about life’s struggles, temptation to sin, hurt, loss or pain. This will usher in a new era in which we experience a world without sin, filled with true joy, peace and a time to worship our King for all that He’s done for us. This is a passage that ought to fill our hearts with hope because this is what we as Christians long for. We long for the day when we can finally meet our Savior face to face and stand in awe of who He is and worship Him because He has saved us from eternal punishment and will now have the privilege of being able to spend forever with Him. I look forward to the day when evil no longer has a grip on this world and when Christ destroys the wickedness once and for all. This is something that we can prepare for from now by spreading the good news of the gospel to others around us, living each day for the glory of God and praising Him for all that He’s done. In the closing part of this chapter the prophet tells us what’s in store for creation and for all who look forward to the Lord’s coming again. We get a glimpse of what that will be like. There will be no more hardships or struggles in our life on the earth. Instead of poverty and hunger, there will be plenty for everyone. Instead of violence, there will be peace. “The sound of weeping and crying will be heard no more.” Instead of suffering the effects of aging, we will enjoy youthful energy. Instead of having others enjoy the fruits of our labors, we will be able to enjoy them and share them. In the Lord’s kingdom of peace, everyone will be blessed. Even animals will not fight or kill; the wolf and the lamb will feed together, the lion will eat straw like the ox. They will neither harm nor destroy on all my holy mountain. Every believer’s crowns and rewards will continuously remind us of acts of faithfulness to God done in that window of opportunity on earth.
While God will wipe away the tears and sorrow attached to this world, the drama of God’s work in human history will not be erased from our minds. Heaven’s happiness will not be dependent on our ignorance of what really happened on earth. Rather, it will be greatly enhanced by our informed appreciation of God’s glorious grace and justice in what really happened on earth. In the new heaven and earth, we will understand things so perfectly that all will make sense and be right. There is no doubt that the difficult things from our pasts will no longer cause us pain when we finally get to come into the presence of the God who loved us so completely that He came and died for us!!!
