John 7:37-38
“On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”John 7:37-38 NIV
There is such a huge difference between a cistern and a well. A cistern has to be filled with water or collect water from the outside. It is not self-renewing and can run dry.
On the other hand, a flowing artesian well has water that bubbles up under its own pressure with its cool and refreshing blessing.
This same difference exists between a person trying to be spiritual based on his or her own efforts and a Spirit-filled person.
When we become Christians, Jesus blesses us with his Spirit. The Spirit's presence and power in our lives make all the difference in the world.
The Spirit is living water inside of us, renewing us, refreshing us, empowering us, slaking our spiritual thirst, and giving us life.
Living for Jesus is more than just a spiritual commitment on our part requiring our effort, it also depends on the gift and the blessing of Jesus enabled by his Spirit.
Streams of water, living water for dying hopes, cool water for parched hearts, refreshing water for those tired and weary. This is, of course, much more than a liquid we can drink with our lips.
This is the ultimate water of the soul that God longs to give to us, His children. Let's spend today refreshing ourselves with the promises of Jesus and trusting that, as we draw close to Him, the Spirit will restore our soul.
People have often tried to quench that inner void in their lives through various things such as recreation, success, popularity, narcotics, and even religion. Jesus invites those who are thirsty to come to Him and drink.
By faith, we can receive Him as Savior and find the peace that He alone can provide. He then promises that He will place a spring of living water within those who truly belong to Him.
This of course , refers to the Holy Spirit who indwells in us as the children of God at the moment of our conversion. The Holy Spirit from within us provides the peace and fulfillment that we all need.
This is the promise of God rivers of living water flowing from within us. Jesus is able to satisfy the thirsty soul, but where are the thirsty souls? Where are the souls that thirst for God, to know God in His fullness?
Far too many are satisfied with their religion and no meaningful relationship with God. Even many who profess to be born again exhibit little desire for a closer walk with the Lord.
It is safe to say that one reason we do not see more of a manifestation of God's grace and power working in our lives and Churches is because of this lack of thirst or desire.
May God help us to maintain a thirst for Him and His Glory in our lives and continue to trust Him for His grace and power to be manifest in and through us.
This great promise is to him "that believe on me." To those who thirst for Him and look to Him in utter dependence, He promises "rivers of living water."
Drink with me from His bottomless well. You don't have to live with a dehydrated heart!!!
