Mark 1:36-39
“Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” Jesus replied, “Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also. That is why I have come.” So he traveled throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.” Mark 1:36-39 NIV
When God works in our own lives, He often gives us a quiet season of growth, training, and spiritual development, but we aren't meant to stay in that place. Eventually, we will have to come out and use the gifts He's given us. If we neglect that time of training, we won't be prepared. But if we're mindful, and trust God's training, He will be able to use us in powerful ways we never imagined. Jesus came with a mission to accomplish. Knowing our mission in life helps us clarify our daily commitments and center our efforts on the things God has called us to do. It helps keep us on track and focused. It enables us to say no to things that are merely good so that we can do the essential ones. We don't normally think about Jesus turning down an opportunity to teach, preach, serve, and heal folks. Yet in this situation, he did just that, not because He didn't love the folks where He was, but because God sent Him to proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom in many cities and towns. Therefore, He couldn't get bogged down being a wise teacher and miracle man in just one location. Let's focus on our purpose and ask God to clarify for us what our mission is so that we can accomplish it. Like Jesus, it will help us not get bogged down in things that are just good when there are really essential things to accomplish. The purpose of preaching is to help people understand the salvation of God. It’s not about being entertained or charmed by the charisma of the preacher, it’s about being confronted with God’s Word and becoming connected to God’s Spirit. This makes preaching a controversial form of communication instead of it being a comfortable expression of faith. That is what Jesus came to do. To proclaim the message of the gospel. And the message of the gospel is bigger and more important than simply healing the sick. The message of the gospel is that the time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is coming to us through Jesus. That’s the message that Jesus came to proclaim. And it’s bigger than the healing even of many who were sick. And today, the message of the gospel is also bigger than the healing of we who are sick. Now, don’t get me wrong. God still heals many in our day who are sick. Many times through doctors, medical research, and medicine. Other times, through more obvious miracles. But the Kingdom of God means more than that. It means an end to all sickness and all death, an end to all suffering and all pain and all mourning. No more tears. Only joy. That’s what God intends for us. And that is why Jesus came. But the only way for Jesus to do all that was on the cross. That is where the final healing took place. On the cross. And in the forgiveness of our sins. And that is why He invites us today to believe this good news. Because whether we are sick or well, depressed or happy, rich or poor, deserving or not, God offers to us ultimate healing through the forgiveness of our sins. Through the death and resurrection of His only begotten Son. We are invited to trust and believe. Believe the good news that God cares for us all, and has a plan to bring an end to all sickness and death in our world!!!
