John 6:35
“Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
John 6:35 NIV
Hunger is a powerful motivator. When human beings get hungry enough, they will do almost anything to acquire food. What if we were that hungry for God? What if we were that hungry for God's bread, His Son Jesus?
While we have learned to recognize our physical hunger, so many today cannot identify that empty spot in their souls and the ache in their hearts as hunger for God. Only God, through His Son Jesus, can truly fill that empty spot and relieve that ache.
Jesus is the one who quenches our spiritual thirst and satisfies our spiritual hunger. Come to Him. Listen to Him. Let His Words and His love give you life. In this life and the next, we can never be satisfied apart from Jesus. And on the opposite end of that spectrum, if we have nothing but Jesus, we have everything.
It is understandable why some walked away. They didn’t want to surrender everything to Jesus. Some people probably wanted a show, to be a part of something powerful, or to have a need met. Their world was similar to our world today, looking for more money, more things, more options and more religion. More was the focus of their desires, actions and attitudes.
Jesus spoke in direct contrast, saying “I am” the answer. Jesus did not come to leave us wanting; He came to give us everything. He is everything. Like Peter, we can say with joy, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life”
It must have saddened His heart when Jesus saw their proud, unbelieving attitude, especially when they asked Him to show them a sign that He was the Messiah as He claimed. They argued that their forefathers had eaten heavenly manna for 40 years, so by comparison Jesus had only done one paltry little miracle with earthly food, not daily manna from heaven.
They wanted Jesus to carry out a similar spectacle to Moses, as proof of His Messianic claims. “Give us this bread from heaven," they demanded: "Give us that manna from above."
They clamoured for physical food but refused to acknowledge the astonishing truth He revealed to them: "I Am the Bread of Life," He said: "I am the Bread that you are seeking. He who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst." Jesus offered Himself to the people of Israel, but they turned Him down.
The Lord Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. He is the True Vine without Whom we can do nothing. Jesus is the centre and circumference of life. He is the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End, the Genesis and Revelation, the Source and Conclusion, and the Author and Finisher of our faith.
All are invited to feast at the banqueting table, to feed on Christ our Living Bread Who came down from heaven from the Father of mercies. And all who feast upon the Lord are promised the eternal benefits of this life-sustaining heavenly Manna, that true Bread Who satisfies the hungry heart with all good things.
Every word uttered by our dear Lord Jesus is spirit and life to all who come to Him as Saviour. All those who feed on Christ will live forever, for Jesus said to those who followed Him: "Truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you."
May we daily feed on the Bread of Life, by faith with thanksgiving as we journey through life, for He alone is our life-sustainer for in Him are the words of eternal life!!!
Father thank You for this day and Your Word that is food for our souls and refreshment for our hearts. Lord open up the storehouses of your abundant blessings and let them flow over my friend and family today. Father thank You for sending Your precious Son into the world to be the Bread that came down from heaven to feed our hunger and to give life to those that are dead in their sin. Lord touch us with your presence so that we can serve others by blessing them with Your grace. Be a blessing.
Father, we live You. Amen !
