Isaiah 55:8-9
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV
As an intelligent and thoughtful human, I like to think that I understand the world around me. While I realize there are whole fields of knowledge that lie outside my current grasp, I am confident that given enough effort I could gain an understanding of them. And it is tempting to apply that same thought to God. While I don’t currently understand all that He is doing, if I work at it hard enough I should be able to. But this reminder in Isaiah is a good reality check. God is not like us in any appreciable way. Yes, we are made in His image. But the image of me on my driver’s license is only like me in a superficial way. And the same holds true for us as God’s image-bearer. Too often, we try to second guess God and venture to predict or anticipate what He is doing or what He we imagine He ought to be doing. Too frequently, we create in our minds an unreal God, made in our own image and likeness, instead of realizing that we are made in His image and likeness. We forget that He is the eternal God and universal Creator Whose works and ways are beyond our limited comprehension, while we are temporal creatures, fallen people, a dying race who are at enmity with Him. Man is indeed unique in God's entire creation and although we are made in His image and likeness, we sinned, and by right, our entire race should have been eternally separated from God. But in His amazing grace, He sent His Son to become sin for us so that by believing in Him, we might be forgiven and made the righteousness of God in Him. How vitally important, therefore, it is to remember Who God is and who we are. Remember who God is when you spend time with HIM. Marvel at the wonder of being able to commune with the King of the universe any time, any place. Never take this amazing privilege for granted. Though God is vastly higher and greater than us, God is training us to think His thoughts. As you spend time in The Lord’s Presence, His thoughts gradually form in your mind. God’s Holy Spirit is the director of this process. Let us, in humility, rest in the knowledge that He knows best, and that His plans and purposes are perfect. And although our hopes may be disappointed, our plans may fail, and our expectation may be frustrated, God has a higher purpose to which He is working, and as His children, we are a part of His eternal plan. Let us never forget that His thoughts and plans and ways and works are all working together for good to those that are the called according to His purpose!!!
