Psalms 139:1-4, 13-18, 23-24
“You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand— when I awake, I am still with you. Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Psalms 139:1-4, 13-18, 23-24 NIV
God’s omniscience, omnipresence, and omnipotence are the subjects of David’s meditations in this beautiful psalm. In this psalm David asked God to examine him thoroughly to affirm his innocence. His first meditation is on God’s knowledge, that every aspect of his life was searched out and controlled by what the Lord knew.
He then realized it was impossible to escape from such omniscient control, no matter how far or fast he might go, for God is everywhere. David then stated that God has such control over him because in His power He created Him secretly and planned his life with great care. On the basis of these meditations, David then affirmed his loyalty to God and prayed for God to prove him by examining him.
The theme of this psalm is announced in the opening verse, the Lord knew David penetratingly. David said God’s knowledge came as if He had scoured every detail of David’s life and thus knew him intimately. Has the enemy of your mind ever attempted you into believing that God is not concerned about you? Has he also convinced you that God is not aware of where you are and what you are going through even at this present moment?
If he has, it’s a lie and you need to rebuke, reject and refute satan lies every time he brings those thought to your mind. Those thoughts do not line up with God’s Word, nor do they come from God, they come from your adversary, the devil.
Are you praying, reading your word daily, and following the leading of God’s Holy Spirit? These are the tools needed to help us fight against every lie of the enemy that he brings to our mind that is contrary to God’s Word? “Be on your guard and stay awake. Your enemy, the devil, is like a roaring lion, sneaking around to find someone to attack”
The mind is the battleground the enemy uses to come against us. If the enemy could get a foothold in our mind, he has control of our thoughts. Every act originates out of thoughts. The devil does not want our stuff, he wants our mind.
If we could be honest for a moment, the mind seems to be under attack more now than it’s ever been. Regardless of how fierce the thoughts of the enemy is when he comes to our minds, God has given us the weaponry needed to fight against those thoughts.
The wonder, glory, and sovereignty of the Lord, weaves its way like a golden thread of wonderment, through so many of David's psalms, but none so beautifully than Psalms 139. I love these verses. Just picture the David overwhelmed by the beauty and the wonder, the majesty of God’s work in the womb.
The way He crafted you and me formed our inward parts knit us together. What a picture of what is happening in the womb. God himself is wonderfully forming a child in his image and this is you. This is me. Don’t get over this. Just let it soak in where you are right now. You have been crafted. God himself has formed you.
You know, I think we all have tendencies to think, Oh, I wish I looked this way. I wish I had this gift. I wish I had what that person has. Stop, stop and realize you have been fearfully and wonderfully made by God himself. His hands have knit us together. In particular, I think about the special needs area of families and children and adults with disabilities that are a part of our world and I see amidst what the world might say is not wonderful.
I see the good hand of God creating every single person fearfully and wonderfully. I prefer to believe that there is a divine design to our complete selves. It is no accident when our eyes are blue, our hair is straight, our legs are long, or our fingers are short and stubby.
David said it so beautifully. God made all the delicate, inner parts of our bodies and knit us together in our mother’s womb. He watched as we were being formed in utter seclusion, as we were woven together.
We are the work of the Father's hand. What a comfort and joy to know that although we do not see the Lord, He not only sees us but knows us intimately and has each of one of us in His thoughts constantly. He fashioned and formed us, He selected our parentage, and He scheduled every day of our lives.
When we know what we believe and believe what we know, we should have no fear, for He is with us, His rod and His staff are our comfort, for He knows and cares for You and for me with a blessed intimacy. We may never fully comprehend how much the Father loves us, how intimately He knows us, and how precious every one of us is to Him.
Let us join with David we and tell the Lord, How precious also are Your thoughts to me, O God. God knew each of us before we were born. Since God lives in eternity, He is not hampered with time as we are here on earth. So when God says something is going to happen, it has already happened in reality, just not physically in our space and time.
But when God says it, it will always come to pass exactly as He has spoken. His word never fails. This is one of the greatest proofs of the veracity of the Scriptures. God spoke in many different ways and through many different people and angels and every detail came to pass just as He said it would happen. God has spoken today and has promised to be with us. His thoughts, His plans and His ways are often beyond our imagination.
We seek to know Him and we try to learn His Word but even at our best we are so far short of understanding His mind. Yet, at the same time, He has made simple the things we really need to know to be able to live for Him and to serve Him. Profound but simple trust Him. There is nothing for us to fear and nothing to concern our hearts, for whether we feel it or not, His Word is true.
We are the children of the omniscient, omnipotent God of the universe. He has searched our hearts, and He knows us. He knows our every move and each fleeting thought that passes through our hearts. He knows whether we are waking or sleeping and understands our inner thoughts and the desires of our hearts.
If knowing that God is concerned about us every minute of the day, will bring joy to our hearts and souls and move us to a place of wanting to not only please God, but also serve Him with our whole heart!!!
Father thank You for this day and that You saw us before we were born. Lord let Your abundant blessings fall upon my friend and family today. Lord thank You that every day of our lives recorded in Your book and every moment of our lives is laid out before You. Lord thank You that You gave us life, formed our inward parts, and have scheduled every day of our lives. Lord how we praise and thank You that we have been born-again into Your family, and have received a new life in You. Lord help us to live out this truth in our lives, and may we do only those things that are pleasing in Your sight. Lord You know our worries and fears, our daily pains and problems, and even the number of hairs on our heads. Lord give us wisdom to know where You want us to be used and in what way. Lord use my friend to be the touch of Your love to all today. Be a blessing.
Father, we love You. Amen !
