Isaiah 33:5-6
“The Lord is exalted, for he dwells on high; he will fill Zion with his justice and righteousness. He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure.”
Isaiah 33:5-6 NIV
Isaiah is talking about the last days here, the period before the Second Coming, and the period in which we live. He mentions some specific things that will help us find stability in these times, wisdom and knowledge. Sometimes we get so caught up in the everyday struggle, paying bills, feeding ourselves or our families, making sure we can keep the basics going like food, shelter, clothing, and health insurance that it seems pretty tough to find time for education. But education, in this verse, seems to have a primary importance in our lives. The education that Isaiah talks about here doesn't necessarily have to be formal, or degree seeking, but if wisdom and knowledge are going to be the stability of our times, it's probably something that we should fit into our lives. And I think that we can. One way to gain wisdom and knowledge is to read and study the scriptures. Prayer is a given as well, and again, hopefully we are doing both, but we can do more. But there are opportunities for education in our everyday lives, all around us. These words of comfort are as true today as they were when Isaiah said them more than 26 centuries ago. Living during turbulent times, economical, political, or even just personal, can be confusing and frightening. But God promises to give us insight and awareness, which will make us stable during those times, or as another translation puts it, they will be the foundation of your times. Godly wisdom and knowledge act as an anchor in difficult times and gives us understanding of events happening around us so that we can know what to do, what kind of decision to make. We live in times of great new advancements in almost every area of technology, but with almost every new development that comes, we seem to uncover a corresponding threat to people or the environment or both. The promise found in these verses is that in the storms of life, Godly wisdom will provide confidence and comfort, as well as guide and protect us from greater pitfalls. The fear of the LORD, or reverential respect for God and what He wants us to do, will be a great treasure in our life, creating a firm foundation for us to stand on, which makes us stable, no matter what is happening around us. When our times feel certain, when things are going as we had planned, it’s easy to trust in our circumstances or our own ability to control them. But in uncertain times, we recognize our own limitations. We realize just how much we need God to be the stability of our times. Only in Himwill we find a solid, trustworthy foundation on which to build our lives. God is a rich store of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. We might look to a strong military or economy for salvation, protecting us from those who would seek to cause us harm. We might depend on an educational system and scientific discovery to increase our wisdom and knowledge. And there is some truth to those thoughts. But, in the end, the only salvation that matters is what comes from the Lord. And the only wisdom and knowledge that is unchanging are based on God!!!
