Psalms 119:1-3, 103-105
“Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart— they do no wrong but follow his ways. How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.”
Psalms 119:1-3, 103-105 NIV
We must know the Word of the Lord in order to walk in it. Notice the connection in keeping God’s statutes and seeking Him with all our heart. This is not an application of moral restrictions, this is a revolution of our mind, will and emotions that brings joy into our being. Have you ever thought of how easy it is for us to take the Scriptures for granted?
Here we are in possession of the very Words of God Almighty. Out of His goodness, He has preserved His Word for us. Not only are we blessed to be in possession of Scripture, we are blessed through knowing scripture. As the Psalmist wrote these words, he had a desire to know the Word beyond just an introductory level. He was not content with just knowing the basics of Scripture, he wanted to know the God who inspired Scripture. He knew that he was not only blessed with having the Word of God, he was blessed by knowing the Word of God.
If we follow what the Psalmist says in these first 3 verses, we see that those who practice and know the Scriptures are blessed. In order for us to be blameless, we need to walk in the law of the Lord. If we seek Him with our whole heart and keep His testimonies, we will be blessed. There is a double blessedness that we see in these verses. To know and to practice what God reveals to us in Scripture blesses our lives beyond understanding.
It is one thing to just read the Scriptures, it is another thing entirely to know them and to practice them. In verse 2, we are told that we are blessed if we seek Him with our whole heart. This means that if we truly want to feel the blessings of knowing God’s Word, our devotion to His Word needs to extend beyond just skin level. To read the Word and know the Word but not apply it to our heart and to our lives is a soul killer.
The Word of the Lord is nourishment for the soul, comfort of the heart, help for the afflicted, and shelter from the storms of life. The Word of God guides and instructs, it corrects and teaches, and the inspired writings of Scripture become, to the believer, sweeter than the honey that drips from a honeycomb and more to be desired than fine silver and gold.
A healthy fear of God will hold us in awe and do much to deter us from sin. When we have a proper fear of the living Lord, we live a cleaner life. Any born again person who sins willfully has momentarily blocked out any fear of God. You and I can do that. When we actively engage in sin, we consciously put aside what we know to be the truth about God. We deliberately suppress the knowledge of Him in our hearts and minds. We lie to ourselves by saying, We'll get by. God won't mind so much.
But when we come into understanding, and God's light breaks into our lives like the pure whitewater of a rushing river, we learn to thoroughly hate and dread those actions that will plunge us again into darkness. The psalmist expressed that thought with these words “How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth. I gain understanding from your precepts; therefore I hate every wrong path. Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path" The bible wasn’t just written for fun but it is our manual here on earth.
The Word of God directs you, guides you, informs you on the right things to do, the Word of God gives you insight on who God really is and the Word of God exposes you to the mind of Christ. When you sit to study the bible, it means your mind, body and spirit are willing to learn. The more you read the bible the more your spirit will be strengthened and the more you read the bible the more you will be willing to pray.
May we today taste and see that the Lord is good and wholesome and sweeter than honey to those that believe. May we find the daily nourishment for our soul in the sweet person of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ!!!
