Psalms 119:57-64
“You are my portion, Lord; I have promised to obey your words. I have sought your face with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise. I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes. I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands. Though the wicked bind me with ropes, I will not forget your law. At midnight I rise to give you thanks for your righteous laws. I am a friend to all who fear you, to all who follow your precepts. The earth is filled with your love, Lord; teach me your decrees.” Psalms 119:57-64 NIV
It is so very important that we as Christians learn and study God's Word. Even in our own imperfect laws, ignorance is never an excuse for disobedience. We need to wrap the Word of God around us, pray that God will teach us His statutes. This is critical to our everyday life. Only through an understanding of the Bible do we begin to understand life around us. The cords of the wicked seek to bind us, but the Law of God sets us free. God is our portion. He is everything we need. We learn this as well as the fullness of God's mercy by learning His Word. We have a sense of our deep need. We are always in great need of two things: God’s mercy and wisdom to walk in God’s ways. It is only by God’s mercy and wisdom that we will find the paths of life. So our hearts cry out for more of God’s mercy and more of God’s wisdom in His law that we may truly know what it is to live life and to live it more abundantly. When we become a Christian, we give our heart and our life to God. In obedience to His gospel we are baptized into Christ and our sins are forgiven. We have died to sin and so we live no longer in it because our new allegiance is to Christ and His Will rather than to sin and to self. We have promised to do the Will of God instead of our own will. The other side of this is that as we continue to walk in His light and live for Him, we continue to be cleansed by the blood of Jesus. Becoming a Christian does not mean we never sin again but it does mean our sins are not held against us. The grace of God motivates us to become like Him and to live for Him. Obedience to His Will is our goal for which we strive as we allow His Spirit to work in us and to change us. In His strength we seek to overcome every temptation we face. But we cannot and must not ever allow His grace to become an excuse for not being all He wants us to become. His grace does not give us permission to go on living in sin or to ignore His commands for us. We seek to live up to His glory. We ought to give thanks to God for His commandments and righteous judgments as part of our worship. If it were not for God’s ethical standards and His judgments, whereby He maintains those standards, there would be nothing but chaos on earth. Without God’s judgments, there could be no Christ, no mercy, and no life!!!
