Psalms 20:6-8
“Now this I know: The Lord gives victory to his anointed. He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of his right hand. Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.”
Psalms 20:6-8 NIV
You look around at the world and you see all kinds of things that you might be tempted to put your trust in, like your job, your income, people around you, even good people that you love that you’re tempted to trust in.Because you think about power, symbols of power, and countries, and armies, and just all kinds of different things in the world that would say, hey, you can trust in this, you can trust in that.
The Psalmist here says, I don’t trust in any of those things. I have a much greater more dependable place to put my trust, and that is in the name of the Lord, my God.
Isn’t it enough to simply say we trust in the Lord? Trusting in the name of the Lord is trusting in the Lord, and more. It is trusting in all that God has revealed Himself to be and all that He says He is and all that He promises to be. When we trust in the name of the Lord we are banking on God’s reputation, the reputation of His name.
To trust in His name is to trust in the Lord of hosts, King of kings, Self-existent, Independent, Sovereign, All-powerful, All-mighty, All-loving, All-knowing, Ever-present, Unchanging, Judge, Healer, Creator, Lord, Master, Shepherd, Protector, Keeper, Redeemer, Savior, Defender, Provider, Father, Brother, and Friend.
Everyone wants to have victory in everything that they do or tackle. They want to win in the end. Although everyone wants to win, the majority do not feel as if they are winning. Watching other people causes them to often think that they are losing the battle.
As things go wrong and do not go the way a person thinks they should go, most people think they have lost the victory and are a failure. At this point many will give up and not try any more. This is losing the battle and is failure. David learned that God gives victory to those who are anointed. God always answers and gives the needed victorious power to overcome.
If 30,000 chariots and 360,000 pounds of horseflesh were stampeding toward us, we might also be tempted to retreat. Chariot like institutions can seem huge and impenetrable. Chariot like tasks or circumstances can seem overwhelmingly larger than we are.
With financial problems, diseases, family conflict, marriage troubles, wayward children, tasks, assignments, and huge responsibilities before us, fear will consume us unless we are truly persuaded that the name of the Lord is infinitely greater than these things.
It is common for believers to struggle with the thought that they have been given victory. They see things happening in their life that does not appear to be victory but defeat. God does not appear to answer their cries for help. Some will say that this is only about Jesus and not about them. They forget that as a believer they are anointed by God. They are anointed with His Holy Spirit, so they can have victory.
Yet, if they stay focused on trusting God and His direction in their lives, they will begin to see that there is victory all the time. Walking through a difficult situation with joy and head held high is victory. Walking through a difficult situation knowing that God is in control of it is victory. Turning away from any sinful temptation is a victory. Faith in God will ultimately result in the perfect victory of eternal life in heaven with God.
God has given us victory. He has won the war for us. All we need to do is trust Him and follow Him daily. Know that God is in control and wants you to win every time.
Ask God to open your eyes to the daily victories in your life, the little steps that move you forward in your journey with God. Do not be discouraged when things don’t go your way or the way you think they should go. God is in control and is doing the best for you. You have victory in Jesus.
We trust in the name of the Lord because, in Christ, we bear the name of the Lord. We are His children who are called by His name. Trusting is not just something we do. Trusting is who we are!!!
From one of my favorite hymns:
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus; there's just something about that name.
Master, Savior, Jesus, like the fragrance after the rain;
Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, let all Heaven and earth proclaim
Kings and kingdoms will all pass away,
But there's something about that name.
Kings and kingdoms will all pass away,
But there's something about that name.
Father, thank You for this day and the victory You provided us through the resurrection of Christ. Lord, let us never forget Your sovereignty over all that You created. Let Your abundant blessings fall upon my friend and family today. Lord, strengthen us in our struggles, give us the courage to not put faith in the chariots or the horse but put our trust and faith in You and Your Word. Lord, use us to be someone’s example and light to find You in the chaos of this world. There is something about that Name. Be a blessing.
Father, we love You. Amen.!
