Colossians 4:7-8
“Tychicus, a beloved brother, faithful minister, and fellow servant in the Lord, will tell you all the news about me.” Colossians 4:7-8 (NKJV)
So Ray Fowler well known evangelical and writer said Tychicus is the mail man. He is the one who actually delivered this letter from Paul to the Colossians. Now this was no easy task. Paul was in prison in Rome over 1,000 miles away. Tychicus would have to cross Italy on foot, then sail across the Adriatic Sea, cross Greece on foot, sail across the Aegean Sea and then walk an additional 100 miles on foot to Colosse. You think your mail man has a tough job?
But Tychicus was more than just the mailman! Paul calls him “a dear brother, a faithful minister and fellow servant in the Lord.” Tychicus was a fellow worker with Paul who accompanied Paul faithfully on his journeys.
Many well-known ministries these days are led by well-known men and women. Christian websites, social media, and bookstores are all full of information about and by people whose names are prominent. Infrastructure, logistics, accounting, press releases, and much more accomplish all of this behind the scenes.
Tychicus, mail man or as others have said, his press agent, faithfully followed and served Jesus by ministering alongside Paul. Instead of being another “Paul,” he acted as a courier of information and a channel of encouragement and comfort to other believers interested in the ministry of the great apostle. He acted in his assigned capacity with faithfulness and tenderness.
The godly character of this dear man of faith was manifested in his actions, attitude, and commendable ministry.
May we, like Tychicus, walk in wisdom, pray in spirit and truth, redeem the time, and give godly comfort and encouragement to our brothers and sisters in Christ. May we, like him, pray without ceasing, rejoice in the Lord continuously, and in everything give thanks to our Heavenly Father.
May we seek to be faithful servants of God and develop the sort of Christlike character that honors the Lord in word and in deed and may we give Godly encouragement and comfort to all those who are placed in our path, for the honour of His holy name.
But if you feel like an unknown or you’re not serving Christ in a larger setting where no one seems to know your name. Take time to ponder your purpose in God’s plan of service He has you in. When you are tempted to think, “What difference do I make?” instead, thank God. Thank Him that you get to be a mail man or a press agent, for Christ. Because you are going to be the blessing that someone needs today!!!
Father, thank You for this day and the godly example of Tychicus who gave comfort and encouragement to others and was a faithful man of prayer whom You entrusted to fulfill Your plans and purposes through his life-example. Give us the grace to faithfully fulfill the work that You have called us to do today and we pray that we may continue earnestly in prayer, be vigilant in worship, give comfort and encouragement to others, and in everything give thanksgiving and praise, for the honor of Your Name. Be a blessing.
Father, we love You. Amen
