Psalms 119:114
“You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.”
Psalms 119:114 NIV
Sometimes when life gets tough, we just need someone to have our back. When we have those moments when we feel like we can’t keep going or that life is just too hard, it’s important to remember what today’s verse says. This verse tells us first that God is our refuge and shield. That means when things get tough, we can go to Him and He will keep us safe and be a place of refuge. When life gets hard and we have difficulty trying to keep going, we can remember that we can always go to God and He will be our place to get recharged and feeling better about life. We also see in this verse that God’s Word can be our source of hope. No matter how crazy life gets, we can always have hope. When something of danger happens or times of immediate trouble happens, what do we normally do? Do we often cover our heads or close our eyes from the danger. We need a hiding place when the danger comes upon us. We need a shield as the danger strikes. In this verse, a hiding place shows that the danger is still around and may not have struck yet, there may still be a chance that it can be avoided. But then we see that psalmist changes to have God as his shield. Now the attack is on. The hiding place is no longer working, the danger, the trouble is now present, and God’s protection is needed like no other time. The first line of defense and the last line of protection from enemy is God. He says “You are my hiding place…” You, are “my shield.” “I hope in Your Word.” There is no other defense. We don’t hope on friends, we don’t hope on family, we don’t hope in our own skills. Our hope is in God and in God’s Word. God has never failed, and His Victory is assured. Listen, God cannot deny Himself. He always honors His Holy Word and is true 100% of the time to His character. We need to walk in a manner that we don’t even consider an alternative response to danger or trouble. The Lord is no less our shield and hiding place in this sin sick world in which we live. He is still our rock of defense and our strong tower in these troublesome times and His precious promises to all His children continue to be “yes' and “amen' in Christ Jesus our Lord. He is he Great “I AM.” We find rest under His wings and behind His shield!!!
