Hebrews 2:17-18
“For this reason he had to be made like them, fully human in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.”Hebrews 2:17-18 NIV
We have a sympathetic Savior who faced temptation and understands the difficulties of living in a broken world. He endured opposition, insults, persecution, and betrayal, but He stayed faithful to the Father. Christ was focused on the joy set before Him as He went to the cross to pay the price for our sins. Now, His resurrection power provides daily grace and strength to help us walk in victory. As our Intercessor, He hears our cries for mercy and rises to our defense when we are in need of forgiveness.
Jesus understands the mental anguish required to say no to sin. When we wrestle with sin, He stands in the gap on our behalf. When we fall, He picks us up and applies the healing balm of forgiveness. In God's divine plan, His eternal Son was to become a full member of the human race, for only a perfect and sinless man could act as intermediary between an offended God Who is angered by sin and sinful humanity, which results in man being eternally separated from a Holy God. No member of humanity's fallen race could ever approach a righteous God, for all are born in sin. This is why in God's divine plan, He gave His only begotten Son to become the representative spokesman for all mankind. Jesus came to earth as a man in order to become the single spokesperson for the whole human race. No other religion offers a helping hand such as this. But Jesus stepped out of His home in heaven and into humanity to redeem mankind from the power of sin that held us captive. He offers us grace in every circumstance and is able to empathize or, feel what we feel when we suffer in this world. This is because He too suffered. Jesus wasn't tempted with evil, in other words He didn't suffer as a sinner because the lure of the world held something over Him. He suffered in humanity because He was sinless born into a world consumed and overpowered by transgressions. Jesus was tested and tried by each experience and interaction with people proving His faithfulness and steadfastness. This was where He proved He was able to be our faithful High Priest in service to God on our behalf. Since Jesus suffered He is able to empathize with us when we undergo suffering and temptation in this world. Jesus is longing for us to come to him for the help we need but are we willing to come? Jesus doesn’t always answer our prayers in the way we would like or expect. Let’s not refuse the help of one who voluntarily became like us in every way!!!
