Mark 14:12-15
“On the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread, when it was customary to sacrifice the Passover lamb, Jesus’ disciples asked him, “Where do you want us to go and make preparations for you to eat the Passover?” So he sent two of his disciples, telling them, “Go into the city, and a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him. Say to the owner of the house he enters, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is my guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ He will show you a large room upstairs, furnished and ready. Make preparations for us there.””
Mark 14:12-15 NIV
The disciples of Jesus found everything just as Jesus had said they would find things. What great comfort.
And today, as we look back at the promises of Jesus, the fulfillment of Jesus words in these verses is another reminder that we will find everything true, just as Jesus has promised us.
And here in these verses we have some observables.
An eminent proof of Christ’s divine nature, in telling them all the particulars which they should meet within the city, as a man bearing a pitcher of water and a house owner.
How readily the heart of this householder was disposed to receive our Saviour and His disciples and to accommodate them with all things needful upon this occasion.
Our blessed Saviour had not a lamb of HIs own, and peradventure no money wherewith to buy one, yet He finds as excellent accommodations in this poor man’s house, as if He had dwelt in Ahad’s ivory palace, and had the provision of Solomon’s table.
When Christ has a Passover to celebrate, He will dispose the heart to a free reception of Himself.
The room which Christ will enter into, must be a large room, an upper room, furnished and prepared.
A large room, is an enlarged heart, enlarged with love and thankfulness. An upper room, is a heart exalted, not puffed up with pride, but lifted up by heavenly-mindedness.
A room furnished, is a soul adorned with the graces of the Holy Spirit; into such a heart, and only such, will Christ enter.
The disciples heard the voice of God telling them to follow a person carrying a pitcher of water. Jesus heard the Father's voice that he is to be the lamb of the Passover. These are strangely specific instructions.
The life of faith is listening to the voice of God and doing what He says. The voice of God will tell us to do strange things, sometimes. I've heard God tell me to go into ministry and serve the homeless which was insane.
Yet I didn't listen to God by myself. I had others to hear with me, to confirm God's guidance, and to affirm the plans I made which interpreted God's voice.
Hearing and interpreting God's voice, especially when the instructions are strange, is not an isolated activity. We need to ask for help from others who have a track record of hearing God's voice as well.
So what? Well, God does have a plan for your life. He is sovereignly in control. He will guide you, sometimes by some very ordinary means and ordinary people which when you look back on them afterwards you will see that they had the hand of God on them.
You will realize like Jacob awaking at Bethel. Surely this is the House of God and I knew it not. Do not despise those trivial encounters in life, and finish well. Pray that God will lead you to the man carrying the jar of water!!!
Father thank You for this day and the life we have in Your son Jesus. Lord open the floodgates of Your abundant blessings and let them flow over my friend and family today. Lord give us the faith to live passionately and confidently, knowing that all of Your promises can be trusted. Lord thank You for taking on flesh to live among us. Lord thank You for Your sacrificial blood by which we can finally stand before You freed from the slavery of sin. Lord use my friend to be someone’s blessing today. Daddy we love You amen. Be a blessing. Love ya!
