Jesus our Judge, Lawgiver and King

Isaiah‬ ‭33‬:‭22

“For the Lord is our judge, the Lord is our lawgiver, the Lord is our king; it is he who will save us.”

‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭33‬:‭22‬ ‭NIV‬‬

The government of the United States of America was established with three branches Legislative, Executive, and Judicial in an effort to keep any one individual or group from gaining an unreasonable amount of power. This government system of three branches I believe was derived from Isaiah 33:22. Because man is sinful, when he is in authority, it is dangerous for one man or one group of people to make the laws Legislative, carry out the laws Executive, and evaluate the laws Judicial. Yet, one day, the Lord Jesus Christ will come and establish His earthly kingdom while sitting upon the throne of His father David. When He comes, Christ will fulfil each branch of government as the judge, the lawgiver, and the king. When we think about God's being our judge, we normally think of falling into judgment. Isaiah reminds us that God's being our judge means that He will be there to judge us based on His will, His rule, and His grace. He is on our side and is looking to save, not condemn. Using the New Testament idiom, when we stand before our Judge we see instead our Father. The Lord God is King over all the earth. As our lawgiver, He defines good and evil and sets the rules. He is also keeping people accountable for obeying these laws and rules, and is therefore called our judge. Many countries have a political system where a parliament or congress makes laws and delegates officials with the authority to enforce those laws by judging and punishing citizens who disobey the regulations. This system is to maintain a balance of power, since history has shown that there is a high risk of power abuse if one person has all authority. But with God, it’s different. He is the ultimate Ruler who has all authority on earth and in heaven. He is absolutely righteous and will never abuse His power. He defines His laws and judges people according to these laws, He is both lawgiver and judge. God is our judge because He rightly sees when we do what’s wrong and because He pronounces a guilty verdict on our sin. God is our lawgiver because He establishes right and wrong, showing how and how not to live. God is our King because He has rightful claim to authority over all things, including us. One of the great challenges and delights of the Christian life is learning to know God truly, and to relate to Him in fullness of His multifaceted character. We live to please the judge, though free in the gift of His justification. We seek to obey His law, but only in His strength and in response to His forgiveness. We offer our whole selves to the King of kings, yet remember that He gave himself for us first!!!
