1 Corinthians 3:10-15
“By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.”1 Corinthians 3:10-15 NIV
It is very easy to build up a church quickly. Very easy to make a great excitement in religion, and become very famous as a soul winner. Very easy. But time tries everything. If there were no other fire than the mere fire of time, it would suffice to test a man’s work. And when a church crumbles away almost as soon as it is got together when a church declines from the doctrines which it professed to hold, when the teaching of the eminent teacher is proved, after all, to have been fallacious and to have been erroneous in practical results, then what he has built comes to nothing. Oh dear friends, what little we do we ought to aspire to do for eternity. If we shall never lay the brush to the canvas but once, let’s make an indelible stroke with it. There are those that like to suggest that the Bible is outdated and that new revelation is being received which gives rise to a different gospel, an alternative Christ, and a substitute truth which, by definition, is an out and out lie. Other gospels may be preached but there is only One Truth. Other Christs may be worshipped but there is only One Lord Jesus Christ. Other methods of salvation may be sold to the uninformed but there is only One gospel of salvation, that the Son of the living God was sent to be our Kinsman-Redeemer, Whose death alone would pay the price for the sin of the whole world and Whose Resurrection alone would give life to all who believe on His name. He alone suffered, died, and rose again, so that we might be forgiven of our sin and receive life eternal by faith. Paul warned against replacing the truth with another Jesus, another gospel, and alternative ways of salvation. False Christs, false gospels, false hope, and false teaching comes from the father of lies. But let us be unshakable when it comes to the Rock upon which our faith is founded, "for no man can lay a foundation, other than the one which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." Are our lives going to be lived on the basis of gold, silver and precious stones, growing out of that revelation of God by the Spirit, or are they going to reflect the empty, vain philosophies and speculations of the world around so that we live only for pleasure, fame and power instead of being an instrument of the living God? It all comes down to this. Whatever we do in this life must be done from the proper motive, and that motive is the glory of God and the wellbeing of His church. May we be found to be the right kind of builders in the day of God's fiery trial!!!
