Psalms 17:8
“Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings“
Psalms 17:8 NIV
This prayer that God would keep David as the apple of His eye, which now just pause there. There’s so much there. One, that we as rebellious sinners, the Holy God of the universe would even be able to consider ourselves as the apple of His eye. This is what the Bible teaches.
We are made in the image of God and loved by God, and for all who trust in Jesus, you know God as father. Just picture a dad in this world who so loves his children. They are the apple of his eye. He just shines when he thinks about them. He looks at them and spends time with them and he loves them.
This is not an unhealthy picture of a child trying to earn their dad’s approval. This is a picture of a father, a dad who delights in his kids. And this is the picture we have of God as our Father. He’s delighting in you and me as His children.
But not in a way that we’re then compelled to try to earn His favor, but in a way that we just want to stay there close to Him. We want to be in intimate, close, wonderful, encouraging, enjoyable relationship with Him as the apple of His eye. Just to walk so closely with God as your Father enjoying His love for you, walking in love for Him.
Our lives are filled with unexpected dangers. We never know what is coming with each day. There are daily attacks on our soul. But we can have the surety that God is absolutely in control and personally involved in every area of our life. We just have to accept Him and remain close wherever He leads. He will gather us under His wings if we will only accept the offer.
What’s meant by apple of the eye? When someone is the apple of your eye, they are your pride and joy. The apple of your eye is someone you love immensely. The apple of your eye has your focus or attention and favor. The apple of your eye is protected and secure. You think about the apple of your eye all the time. You look for ways to bless the apple of your eye.
And that’s what Believers have with God. He’s concerned for us. He protects us. He hides us from the enemy. He hides us under the shadow of His wings, and no one can snatch us from that place of protection and comfort.
Hide me in the shadow of your wings. That picture of closeness, of intimacy just goes to a whole nother level, that in this image, you’ve got the wings of, I don’t know, an eagle, picture being nestled in the shelter and shadow and protection and provision of someone who is caring for you.
He gazes on us with love. We are reflected as the apple of His eye.
I don’t know about you, but I want to stay in that place as apple of God’s eye!!!
Father thank You for this day and for loving us with joy daily. Lord thank You for forgiving us our wayward hearts. Lord open the floodgates of heaven and pour out Your abundant blessings upon my friend and family today. Lord please lead us today to think about Your awesome love, forgiveness, and protections. Lord please imprint Your Holy Word upon our hearts and minds and make it a healing balm over the wounds that this world has inflicted on us. Lord thank You Lord for hiding us in the shelter of Your wings and being our strong tower. Lord use my friend to be the light of Your love to all today. Be a blessing. Love ya
